Hello from the year 2009.

In November, my hosting provider notified me that there’d been some data compromizes affecting my site. As best I can tell, this involved htaccess redirects that caused links on my site to instead send traffic to malware “anti-virus” sites. They said they’d fixed it and that I only needed to worry if I’d been using a Windows machine to FTP into my site during a certain time period. I use Linux, so I was not concerned. However, I did do some googling to find out more about what happened and found others blaming the host itself for poor security.

This caught my attention, and I started to consider other hosting options. Then around Christmas, the server on which my site was hosted got hit again. I couldn’t reply to comments because of the hijacked links that sent me to malware sites. I imagine anyone visiting my site might have experienced the same thing. If so, please accept my sincere apologies.

Anyway, I contacted the host and they wrote back saying they’d cleaned it all up. Unfortunately, they hadn’t. This was the last straw and I packed my things and left. I’m now hosted by A Small Orange.

While I was at it, I decided to switch blogging software as well. When I first heard about Habari, they were at version 0.-something. They didn’t even have a release available. Well, they’re still at 0.-something (0.52 is the current stable release) but it’s obviously come along way. I’m really impressed with what I’ve seen in just the last week of using it. So, this blog is now powered by Habari. I’ve already hacked together a plugin to grab the most recent posts. There are some other things missing that I want to work on, as well as create a better theme. But those things will have to wait till I have more time, as I’ve just started a new full-time job.
